Technical Advancements In motion Sensor Light
There are different models of motion sensor lights which are light fittings with inbuilt motion sensors. The purpose of these motion sensor lights are to act as a single unit which controls its own switching action using its motion sensors. Such motion sensors can be either IR sensors or ultrasonic sensors. The senor is integrated in the lighting fixture and different models will have sensing capabilities similar to other individual motion sensors. Both ultrasonic sensors and IR sensors are similar in performance but use different technologies for motion sensing.
Lights combined with Motion sensor and Light sensor
This is the next technical advancement in which Lights are combined with a motion sensor and a light sensor in a single unit. In this case the light senor can be adjusted to a certain lux level. So if a motion is detected, the lights will be switched ON only if sufficient light is not available. Eg. If during day time, the lights will not be activated if motion is detected. However during night time, the lights will be automatically switched ON when motion is detected.
In this category also, IR sensors and ultrasonic sensors can be used, but IR sensors will become more popular and economically feasible.
Automation of Motion sensor lights
All sensors such as IR sensor, ultrasonic sensor, microwave sensor, light sensor etc. come with connectivity features for automation. Most of the manufacturers offer connectivity to automation protocols such as KNX, BACnet etc. and can be integrated to the same.
LED Lights with motion sensor
Already LED lights combined with motion sensor as a single unit are available which offer great energy saving both by means of motion sensing as well as advancement in LED technology.
Motion sensor lights with Wireless connectivity (WiFi or Bluetooth)
LED lights are already available with Bluetooth or WiFi connectivity. The lights are controllable through computer based or mobile based applications for changing colour, dimming the lights, switching ON/OFF etc.
So it is only a natural extension to combine the Wireless connectivity in the lights along with motion sensor.
Wired Looping of motion sensor lights
It is already possible to loop different motion sensors lights so that if movement is detected at vicinity of one light, all other lights in the same group will be switched ON automatically. This is irrespective of the individual detection of the lights.
Wireless Looping of motion sensor lights
In this case the looping is carried out through a Wifi network which is already possible through an automation system such as KNX, BACnet etc.
As different technologies can be combined, there might be already manufacturers who have combined wireless grouping through WiFi based application without need of an automation system. In this case the grouping and regrouping of different lights should be possible through an application. In course of time we would be able to simply replace existing light fittings of a huge warehouse with WiFi connected motion sensor LED lights with light sensor without any need of any wiring or an automation system. Definitely customer should be able to change grouping of the lights simply by selecting the lights in the drawing of the warehouse on a computer based or mobile based application. Bypassing individual lights, dimming individual lights etc. should be possible through WiFi.
Scale of Economy
With the advancement of motion sensors, these sensors have become cheaper and smaller. Presently the sensors are costlier than light fittings for residential or office applications. Hence the combined price of a motion sensor with light still look unattractive for a general consumer in terms of savings in energy. However very soon the price will be much more attractive.

In the course of time, it looks like PIR sensor technology will be considerably cheaper than ultrasonic sensor technology.
Pros & Cons of motion sensor lights
Pros:
- Existing lights can be simply replaced with such lights
- Existing wiring need not be changed. Generally if you want to install motion sensor in an existing lighting system, the output of motion sensor has to be routed through the lighting circuit so that the lights are controlled by the motion sensor.
Cons:
- Presently when lights have to be installed for large existing installations, it might be more economical and technically better to install a separate motion sensor for an area consisting of multiple lighting circuits. Motion sensor can be connected to each lighting circuits, so that the entire circuit will be switched.
